Joanne Panayi

Joanne spent much of her childhood scribbling away on cat drawings or designing Cinderella’s next stunning dress. Pencil and paper and felt tip pens were her first love, being inspired greatly by the work of L.S Lowry and Beryl Cook. Life unfortunately took a tragic twist upon the death of Joanne’s mother and after finishing school she tried out many different jobs, before she took up sign writing and escaped with her brushes in 1994 to live in sunny Cyprus. There she worked as a freelance artist, taking on many different aspects from traditional signs, to large scale murals, commercial art and portraits. Moving back to Britain in 2002, Joanne studied at Stoke on Trent College before completing a degree in 3D Design Craft at Staffordshire University. It was from this point her work firmly moved into the 3D arena and the multi-media sculptural work started to develop. Joanne takes most of her creativity from people around her, looking at the vast scope in the human character. It might be a particular look, or a slight stance or movement that will create enough stir to pick up a pencil and document it. A mixture of influences strongly inspire Joanne’s work from different materials to relationships and emotions - much of her work has a story behind it. “Each of the materials work in a completely different way, and the alchemy of manipulating them into my own ideas is quite magical. Each sculpture takes a considerably long time to make, but well worth it when they’re done” joanne [B.1970, Newcastle under Lyme] panayi
