Mike Whitfield

Mike Whitfield has over 40 years of expertise in producing exquisite pieces of art, both decorative and functional using traditional techniques and highest quality woods, latterly progressing to specimen pieces of breath-taking proportions. Mike uses principle skills from his early career as a Mechanical Engineer and combined with native hardwood, felled by local Tree Surgeons from end of life trees, creates inspirational pieces in Ash, Chestnut, Cherry, Elm, Hawthorn, Holly, Laburnum, Oak, Maple, Robinia, Sycamore, and Yew; Burrs being his passion. Specialising in bowls and platters the challenge for him comes in revealing the best features and shapes of each piece, maintaining the natural edge where possible and exposing the amazing grain patterns, which tell their own story. The prize is in the extremely surprising, fascinating and unique end results whether it be from the burr, dried boards milled from tree trunks, rough turned bowl blanks left to dry for a long period or wet turned. As Custodians of one of our most natural diminishing resources WOOD, Mike is proud to be playing a part in making pieces available for everyone to enjoy in their lifetime and beyond as Family Heirlooms. As a tactile product loved by children and adults alike it gives off lots of energy and releases the feel good factor on ownership. Join him in playing a part in our history.
